8 x nice sidewalk cafés in Nijmegen

Nijmegen has the highest terrace density in the Netherlands. There is an abundance of choice for those of you who want to sit outside somewhere, to enjoy a drink, coffee, or lunch. To make it a little easier for you to choose, we have selected 9 nice terraces in Nijmegen! You’ll be in the right place in the centre of town, Nijmegen-Oost, or Bottendaal.

1. Level 4

You can find the only rooftop bar in Nijmegen on top of Hotel Nimma. When it’s warm and sunny in the weekend, the rooftop café Level 4 opens. Whilst sipping on a cocktail, you’ll be able to see all of Nijmegen, the bridges across the Waal, and even a big part of Lent.

2. Café Maxim

For drinks on a Friday afternoon, a first date, or just casual enjoyment in the sun: the cosy Café Maxim has got you covered. There’s always a homely vibe and the trees that overhang the terrace make it look cosy and comfortable. Our advice? Order the Botterik. This specialty beer by Brewery De Hemel only gets poured in Bottendaal bars.

3. In de Kazerne

World famous in Nijmegen-Oost, but barely known by people of Nijmegen: In de Kazerne. This lovely café borders the Krayenhoff kazerne, a national monument where the First Infantry used to be stationed. Now it’s a peaceful place for lunch, drinks, or diner. On Sundays, you can also join in for a large breakfast.

4. Mi Barrio

For a nice vacation vibe in your hometown, Mi Barrio is the place to be. With a glass of sangria – complete with glittery cocktail pick – in hand, it’ll feel like Spain for a moment. But you can find this place right here: at Fransestraat in the Indische Buurt. Of course, you’ll find delicious Spanish snacks and paella on the menu.

5. De Meesterproef

The Waal ships passing right in front of your nose, and a lunch filled with local products on your plate. That’s the Meesterproef experience. This restaurant is one of the gems of the industrial Honig complex and especially the terrace is worth your while.

6. Nibbles

The Ganzenheuvel is one of the best squares of Nijmegen as soon as the terraces are placed in spring. From Nibbles’ sidewalk café, you can look at the shopping crowds crossing the Lange Hezelstraat, so it’s a perfect place for people watching. And admit: that is probably your favourite activity on a terrace as well.

7. De Fabriek

Be careful that you don’t miss the big gate that brings you to De Fabriek. The location is hidden in a courtyard behind the Van Welderenstraat. A visit to this café slash concept store will feel like discovering a secret hotspot. You can enjoy a lovely cup of coffee or a big slice of apple pie, to then shop in the extraordinary shop adjoining the café. Because... there used to be lamp factory there!

8. De Hemel

De Hemel is located in the commanderie of St. Jan, a medieval monastery building in the center of Nijmegen. De Hemel has been a bustling hotspot for years. Here you can taste, enjoy, experience: Burgundian cuisine, home-brewed beers, distillates and home-roasted coffee!
