Literature

There is plenty to do in Nijmegen for literature lovers, because in our city, stories come to life! Stories and poetry, reading and listening, in a shop or at a festival; literature knows many shapes and forms. Did you know we even have literary boyband in Nijmegen? Read the interview here. Submerge yourself, and dive into Nijmegen's literature.

Experience the stories

Throughout the year there are numerous events and activities for story lovers. Of course, it all starts at the literary heart of the city: Library Gelderland Zuid, also called Bibliotheek Mariënburg. At the library, every week interesting lectures and signing sessions by established writers and poets are organised.

Would you rather meet the new makers? Then go to the Wintertuinsessies hosted by De Nieuwe Oost | Wintertuin; a literary series of talk shows in which makers get the opportunity to compose their perfect evening. Every talk show has its own host, theme, and location. This allows you to get acquainted with new makers, literature, and the city!

For those who wish to get to work themselves, there is 'buiten zinnen', the place for novice word artists in the east of the Netherlands. Workshops, stage nights, and short films with tips and tricks; 'buiten zinnen' believes that there is a writer in all of us.

Literary festivals

Celebrate literature at one of the literary festivals! In the autumn, during the literary festival 'buiten zinnen', artists share their favourite lines with you. You will find them on stage, in the pub, or at the library.

The Wintertuinfestival takes place at the end of each year. Every year, dozens of writers, poets, scientists, musicians and artists are invited. Both the established literary names as well as upcoming talents travel to Nijmegen. There is a new central theme at the Wintertuinfestival each year.

Book week fan? In Nijmegen, we usher in this week with the Nijmegen Book festival, an evening that revolves around the theme of the book week. The Nijmegen Book festival is a mixture of literature, art and music.

Bookstores full of stories

Looking for a bookstore? Dekker vd Vegt, Roelants, or the Kinderboekwinkel are some of the places you can go. But you will not find the most special cookbook of Nijmegen at a bookstore. For that, you go to pop stage Doornroosje! 'Can I Have Some Of Your Famous Hot Sauce?' is a cookbook by the chef of Doornroosje, Nienke van Hunen. This book contains the favourite recipes and best backstage stories of artists performing at 'Roosje'.
