Up for something new? In Nijmegen you can go on a spree in the oldest shopping district of the Netherlands! In one of the 400 stores you can always find something to your liking. In the Lange Hezelstraat you’ll find beautiful historic buildings and at the Marikenstraat you literally shop at a higher level: at the upper level you’ll find more exclusive stores, at ground level the larger chains!
Next to well-known and popular chain stores you’ll also find a large array of unique boutiques. Streets like the Houtstraat, Van Welderenstraat and In De Betouwstraat have plenty of stores that are bound to excite your shopping senses! And when the weather is bad you can always go to the indoor shopping mall the Molenpoortpassage. Fancy a drink? Nijmegen has the highest density of sidewalk cafes so there’s always a spot for you to relax!
Lange Hezelstraat and Stikke Hezelstraat
Together, these streets form the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands, featuring many historic façades and distinctive buildings. Here you’ll find mainly small, local shops, specialist outlets and lovely cafés. It’s a wonderful place to take a leisurely stroll amongst boutiques, design shops, delicatessens and concept stores.
The Stikke Hezelstraat continues uphill from the Lange Hezelstraat and is literally known for its steep gradient, which adds a fun (and challenging) touch to the cityscape.
Marikenstraat
The Marikenstraat is Nijmegen’s most modern and unique shopping street: a sort of ‘shopping on different levels’. The street has two floors of shops, with better-known brands on the ground floor and more exclusive boutiques, design shops and gift shops upstairs.
So you can literally shop on different levels. Enjoy a playful and comfortable shopping experience.
Broerstraat
Nijmegen’s traditional ‘main shopping street’. Here you’ll mainly find large chains and mainstream shops, and it runs from Molenstraat towards the Grote Markt. The street has a long history as a shopping street dating back to the late 19th century.
Burchtstraat
This is a wide shopping street right next to the Grote Markt, with many well-known retail chains such as H&M, C&A, Flying Tiger, etc.
Ziekerstraat
Ziekerstraat is situated close to Broerstraat and the surrounding shopping areas and is characterised mainly by a mix of chain stores and some smaller shops. The street forms a thoroughfare leading towards the Molenpoortpassage. Handy for an extra spot of shopping.
Tip!
During your day out shopping, take a stroll through the city centre: start at the Grote Markt, head along Broerstraat to Marikenstraat, and then along Burchtstraat to Lange Hezelstraat. This way, you’ll experience a lovely contrast between large chain stores, modern shop designs and historic boutiques all in one walk.
Nijmegen shops opening hours
Shops in Nijmegen have long opening hours, also on Sundays. There is a shopping evening in the city centre every Thursday evening until 9 p.m. Check our range of shops to find out whether your chosen shop is open.
Shopping on Sunday
In Nijmegen, every Sunday is shopping Sunday. All shops are allowed to be open on Sunday, with the exception of New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday and Christmas Day. On a shopping Sunday in Nijmegen, nearly all shops in the core shopping area, as well as a large number of shops located in the surrounding shopping streets, are open from 12.00pm till 5pm.
Nijmegen shopping evening
Nijmegen shopping evenings in the city centre feel like fun nights out. The shopping evenings are on Thursdays. The shops in the city centre will remain open until 9 p.m. on those evenings. Around certain holidays, the shops in the centre of Nijmegen will be open for an additional number of evenings. This will give you plenty of opportunities to do your holiday shopping.
Opening hours holidays
During the holidays, shops may be open at different hours. Almost all shops will have the same deviating opening hours. We aim to keep everyone informed to this regard through our website and social media. This will give you plenty of time to do your Easter, Sinterklaas or Christmas shopping.
